Increasing Women in Neuroscience
Contribute to a large-scale effort to increase awareness about issues facing women in academia.
Research shows that diverse teams make for better science and results. Although the number of women in STEM careers has increased over the decades, data shows that these numbers decrease in the upper ranks of academia. The Society for Neuroscience’s Department Chair Training to Increase Diversity is committed to promoting greater diversity and representation of women, minorities, and young investigators.
The Increasing Women in Neuroscience (IWiN) interactive courses in this Neuronline Collection – which are based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant Number 0930184 – provide insight for recruitment, work climate, and promotion and tenure best practices.
In addition to these open-access courses, SfN members have access to a series of IWiN toolkits and related resources that are adaptable for your use at your institution or local chapter meeting.
Each toolkit contains a 30-minute presentation that focuses on specific gender retention issues, such as recruitment, hiring, promotion, and evaluation. The presentations highlight critical data, real-life success stories, practical strategies for breaking the cycle, and ready-to-use tools.
The toolkits were adapted from live workshops and made possible through the NSF-funded Department Chair Training to Increase Women in Neuroscience program.
